Online housing advice

Self-determined through everyday life

Online portal provides manufacturer-independent and neutral information on the topics of living space adaptation, financing and aids for independent everyday life.

Breaking down barriers

living safely and comfortably at home

Since 1994, the non-profit association Barrierefrei Leben has been campaigning for people who are elderly, disabled or in need of care to have as independent and self-determined an everyday life as possible. Since 2006, the association has also operated the portal - in cooperation with federal ministries, associations and other bodies - supports information and advice seekers throughout Germany and provides manufacturer-independent and neutral information on the following topics:

Housing adaptation: barrier-free (re)construction

You want to improve your living situation and are looking for suggestions for more comfort and accessibility? Whether it's adapting your home for living in old age, independent living with mobility impairments or barrier-free living in all situations: the portal provides you with comprehensive information on these and many other topics. In addition, you will find tips and examples of solutions as well as useful information on implementation for tenants, owners and builders.

Independent and safe living with assistive devices

Technical products and devices help with many everyday tasks. For example, a bread slicer makes cutting bread easier. Many technical aids are therefore already used in every household - every day and without giving them much thought. For people with minor or major mobility impairments, there are also a number of special aids that facilitate independent living in old age or in the event of a need for care and promote independence.

Facilitating care at home

Classic aids also enable people in need of care to live as independently and self-determinedly as possible within their own four walls. But such aids also make care activities much easier for caring relatives and care professionals in the home environment. In the online home advice service, you will find solutions for various care requirements. In addition, you will receive further tips on the provision of aids via the health and long-term care insurance funds.

Funding, assistance and cost absorption

Aids, housing adaptations and barrier-free construction cost money. This is no surprise, yet the costs of such measures often represent a major challenge for those involved. For this reason, the portal provides information on various grants and subsidies for age-appropriate conversions and barrier-free living, as well as on possible cost units for the provision of aids in the private and domestic sector.
